Previous campaigns by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have targeted plumbers, medical professionals and restaurant owners, as well as electricians, tutors and property owners.
Now, HMRC is looking to tackle direct sellers and those involved in home improvement trades with two new campaigns in the coming months.
The first of these disclosure opportunities is available to individuals who sell products to customers away from a retail shop environment, often in customers’ own homes. This could involve product parties, door-to-door sales, or simply selling to friends and relatives.
This campaign will start on 26th September 2012 and run until 28th February 2013.
Meanwhile, Home Improvement Sweep Up is the third campaign focusing on the home repair, maintenance and improvement sector. Following campaigns targeted at plumbers and electricians, trades people such as roofers, window fitters, carpenters, bricklayers and joiners will be given a time-limited opportunity to bring their tax affairs up to date.
As with previous campaigns, those who come forward by the deadline are likely to receive the best possible terms for paying the tax they owe. Those who wait for HMRC to come to them will find that they have to pay much higher penalties, or even face criminal prosecution.
