Celebrating Carol’s retirement after 37 years of dedication at JW Hinks

22/09/2025

After an incredible 37 years at JW Hinks, Carol Deen, our very own Financial Controller, is preparing to retire on 30th September. We caught up with her to reflect on her journey, the company’s growth, and what lies ahead. Here’s a glimpse into Carol’s story, shared in a friendly Q&A format

Q: Carol, you’ve been with JW Hinks for 37 years! How does it feel to be retiring?

Carol: When I first announced my retirement a year ago, it felt a bit strange imagining life outside of work. But now, I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve enjoyed every moment at JW Hinks, and I’m excited for the next chapter.

Q: Can you tell us about your early days at JW Hinks?

Carol: I joined in 1988, initially working part-time through a job share arrangement while raising my three children. Before that, I worked in an accounts office for Billington’s Chemists. JW Hinks offered a convenient 10am–2pm schedule that allowed me to balance work with school runs, and they’ve always supported flexibility as my role evolved. I never had to choose between work and family commitments, which meant a lot to me.

Q: How has the company changed over the years?

Carol: The growth has been remarkable! We’ve grown from 36 to over 60 employees, and the technology has undergone a complete transformation, from large computers with floppy disks to modern digital systems. The company has always felt like a family, and I’ve stayed because of the supportive, open environment.

Q: What makes JW Hinks such a special place to work?

Carol: It’s the culture. People genuinely feel appreciated here. Communication is key—if you’re struggling or need support, the team is always there to help. Staying true to yourself and being open makes a huge difference, and that’s something I hope younger employees take to heart.

Q: What is your legacy at JW Hinks?

Carol: I’ve always approached my work with curiosity and a willingness to learn. I didn’t have formal exams when I started at 29, but the support from colleagues made the learning process enjoyable. Antha will be taking over my role, and I am confident that the company is in great hands.

Q: Any plans for retirement?

Carol: Oh, plenty! We plan to travel extensively—New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Alaska, Canada, and across Europe by train. We also have a small property in Spain, which we bought just before COVID-19 to enjoy sunny winters. Beyond travel, I’m looking forward to walking, spending time with family, and cherishing moments with my 98-year-old mother.

Q: Any advice for your colleagues or those starting out?

Carol: Be open, communicate, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. JW Hinks has always been supportive, and the environment here encourages growth while valuing family and personal life. Embrace opportunities; they often come in ways you don’t expect.

Carol, thank you for 37 incredible years of dedication, flexibility, and support. Your legacy at JW Hinks will be remembered fondly, and we wish you all the best for this exciting new chapter!
