While it may, in the current economic climate, be tempting to attempt to increase patient numbers by offering discounts, the General Dental Council (GDC) has issued a reminder to dentists regarding their patient responsibilities.
The guidance states that dentists need to put the interests of their patients before any financial gain. Therefore, if they wish to make use of discount vouchers, dentists must “assess the patient, obtain valid consent, obtain a medical history and explain all options before carrying out any work”.
Furthermore, dentists are required to be trustworthy and honest and, as such, not make any assertions or offers which may mislead patients. Otherwise, they open themselves up to the possibility of complaints or even a GDC investigation.
